Hindu Wedding Tips & Ideas

From our previous blog on The Traditional Hindu Wedding, we decided to give some tips and ideas to our potential brides.  Venues, dresses and catering are a few of the categories we will talk about in this particular blog.

INVITATIONS:

Wedding invitations set the tone for any wedding. There is a huge selection of invitations of different styles, textures and themes to choose from. This sometimes make it more difficult to select one, but usually when one strikes a note with you, you will know it and feel that sense of "this is the one".  Whether you like intricate
designs, simple elegance or packaged inserts etc, all these are available from a number of suppliers online as well as locally. The Indian expo also do some nice styles if you're concerned about the shipping costs of invitations which can weigh a hefty sum when bundles together. The scroll type invitation is a favourite that adds a traditional elegance and flair to your wedding. A moment you deliver such an invitation to your guest, it brings a reverence and special sense of importance that their presence will resonate with you..

WEDDING DRESSES:

The wedding dresses for a Hindu wedding are usually the traditional Sarees and are usually yellow and red and in the last instance if so desired the bride can change into the traditional white wedding dress of most brides as her last dress. There are a number of designs and dresses that can be very elaborate or simple. Your choice depends on if you are sticking to traditional colours, or stepping outside the box as well as your budget.

LOCATION - TEMPLES FOR WEDDING IN TRINIDAD:

A temple is always a safe and wonderful option for your wedding. It is equipped with all the items and advice required for your big day. It also brings a sense of sanctity and spirituality to your already blessed day. When choosing a temple be sure that your guests will be comfortable as they will be seated at the ceremony for a significant amount of time. Ensure the temple is equipped with some mechanism to keep your guests cool, whether its fans or air conditioning. Also ensure that there is enough space to accommodate all your guests and signage for simple instructions such as which entrance is the main one to be used as well as where to put ones shoes, as shoes are not allowed in the temple. Dharma Prakash Sabha Vyas Hindu Complex & Devi Mandir to name a few.

These are things your wedding planner / coordinator should have in place and under control on the day for easy transitioning and comfort of guests. there are many temples available in Trinidad and they are usually chosen based on the location and if the bride or groom belong to the particular temple of worship. The temples that are usually used for weddings are The Lakshmi Narayan Temple, The Dattatreya Temple and

CATERING (FOOD & DRINK)

A Hindu wedding does not consist of any Meat or Alcohol. The menu is completely vegetarian  and the drinks serves are usually soft. A token of sweets in a box or bag is usually given to guests which consists of kurma, parsad, barfi and some kind of fruit. The main meal is usually served on a banana leaf and consists of all the Indian vegetarian dishes such as channa & aloo, pumpkin, paratha roti, rice, mango, dhal, bhaji and tomatoes choka. The meal is usually accompanies by a very hot pepper sauce known as "mother in law".  The drinks serves are usually juice, water or carbonated soft drink.

ENTERTAINMENT:

At a Hindu wedding, the use of a Tassa band is a must. There are so many stages in the Hindu wedding that requires this celebrating sound during all the pre marital rites, rituals and days leading up to the day of marriage. Of course there are many Tassa groups, which are each good in their own right, but when selecting be sure to select a group that can give the versatility of sound you need for the different elements of the marriage ceremony.

You would also want to be sure that they look uniformed and dressed for you wedding for impact. Whether its in the same colour shirts and black trousers or something a bit more elaborate with waistcoats or traditional Indian wear, be sure to be specific when selecting so they are aware of your expectation. Dhol drumming is one of the preferred choices for drumming recently as it gives a Bollywood twist to the drumming with songs people can identify with.

DECOR / EVENT DESIGN

This is a fascinating item for all persons touching the wedding event. A Hindu wedding is always full of vibrant colours that take your breath away. There are some items that are standard and need to follow the rituals, rules and traditions in order to be successfully executed.

However there are other items that can be left to the bride and groom such as the reception decor which includes the entrance, stage, tables and stations, lighting and general decor in specific areas. Gold elephants, pieces and statues are usually present in most decor for a Hindu wedding. The colours selected for the theme can be vibrant or of a specific theme, such as Moroccan, Asian  or even Lebanon. Which ever theme is selected, be sure to choose a decorator who has executed similar jobs and can show pictures and evidence of their work.

Its also a good idea to check reviews on decorators and their standard of work ethics and quality of work before securing their services, especially as it relates to the decor required for the temple or ceremony location, as this has to be spot on without failure for the related marriage rituals.
